{"id":1263,"date":"2012-04-30T04:30:36","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T11:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markccrowley.com\/?p=1263"},"modified":"2012-04-30T04:30:36","modified_gmt":"2012-04-30T11:30:36","slug":"four-magnificent-leadership-practices-of-the-dalai-lama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/four-magnificent-leadership-practices-of-the-dalai-lama\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Magnificent Leadership Practices Of The Dalai Lama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1264\" title=\"The Dalai Lama At The University Of California, San Diego\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/bc7ad81bab4fc3a01d384997d724179a.jpeg\" alt=\"The Dalai Lama Wearing A UCSD Visor\" width=\"273\" height=\"182\" \/>His Holiness, the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Dalai Lama, spoke at my alma mater, the University of California, San Diego last week, and it was an honor and great privilege for me to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that the Dalai Lama is one of our world\u2019s most influential leaders (albeit spiritual and not in business), I paid particular attention to his word choice, the beliefs he expressed and, most especially, to his actions.\u00a0 My hope was that I would observe some compelling and unique leadership practices that I could later pass on to you.<\/p>\n<p>As you might imagine, the Buddhist monk and 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner, did not disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>The Dalai Lama came to UCSD specifically to speak about global climate change and was joined on stage by two of the world\u2019s foremost subject experts, Dr. V. Ramanathan and Dr. Richard Somerville.<\/p>\n<p>Both scientists are distinguished professors at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.\u00a0 Ramanathan discovered the \u201cGreenhouse Effect\u201d three decades ago, and Somerville was the lead author of a climate change paper that shared the 2007 Nobel Prize equally with former Vice President, Al Gore.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Dalai Lama spoke a single word, each researcher took a few minutes to summarize what\u2019s now known about the effects of coal and fossil fuel burning. \u00a0We learned that carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gasses are indeed warming the earth\u2019s temperatures, raising sea levels and melting glaciers (80% of the Himalayan icecaps are now gone).\u00a0 Both experts were emphatic that action is needed now and, within twenty years, the effects of man-made pollution will be irreversible if left unaddressed.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that half of Americans remain unconvinced that this problem is real, Dr. Somerville concluded, \u201cEveryone is entitled to their opinions, but not when it comes to the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With this as a background, let me now share four of the most impressive things the Dalai Lama did to powerfully influence his audience and demonstrate his mastery of interpersonal leadership.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Instead of seeking the spotlight for himself, he gave it to the people who did all the work. <\/strong>\u00a0When the Dalai Lama began speaking, he had no notes prepared.\u00a0 Instead, looking at the two scientists as they concluded, he said, \u201cWell done. I agree exactly.\u201d\u00a0 Selflessly, he gave all the credit to Ramanthan and Somerville, and then used his position to move their work and conclusions forward.\u00a0 It also was quite impressive that the Dalai Lama allowed the scientists to speak first.\u00a0 A common problem in leadership today is that managers feel they need to compete with the very people they\u2019re supposed to be supporting.\u00a0 The Dalai Lama sets a better, more self-assured and inspiring model.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>He respects and encourages other people\u2019s points of view. <\/strong>Acknowledging that many people in society rail against the idea of global warming, the Dalai Lama specifically told his audience that we must never demonize people when we disagree with their beliefs. \u00a0\u201cArgument is okay. Serious debate is okay.\u00a0 But our mental attitude toward people with different beliefs has to be respect.\u201d\u00a0 He reminded us that there are 6 billion people on the planet, each with their own perspective.\u00a0 He therefore warned us to \u201cavoid feeling your view is ever 100% right.\u201d\u00a0 Great advice in life and in business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>He conveys optimism and hope.\u00a0 <\/strong>The Dalai Lama was emphatic that \u201cthe environmental problem is very serious and the scientific data is very convincing.\u201d\u00a0 But rather than be critical of all that created the dilemma \u2013 or even the obstruction some have caused in addressing it \u2013 he maturely laid out a vision for how we all can resolve it.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s far better to remain optimistic,\u201d he advised us. \u201cOptimism encourages people to work for a better life and a better world.\u201d \u00a0The lesson to be learned is that fear is the most destructive motivator of human performance.\u00a0 We must always choose to <em>inspire <\/em>the people whom we lead, especially when our backs are against the wall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>He treats <em>everyone <\/em>with care and concern.\u00a0 <\/strong>When the event was over, the seventy-six-year-old Dalai Lama took time to express his gratitude to the security guards, the doormen, and the ushers.\u00a0 By doing this, he demonstrated that everyone around him was important; the work every person did <em>mattered<\/em>. \u00a0\u201cWhen we treat each other as equals,&#8221; he earlier explained, &#8220;we actually do ourselves a favor.\u00a0 Compassionate people experience less stress, enjoy lower blood pressure and are able to think more clearly.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 If you can imagine how those workers felt when being personally acknowledged by the Dalai Lama, you inherently know how your own employees feel when you take time to honor them.\u00a0 The words, \u201cthank you\u201d are also two of the most powerful ones in our language.\u00a0 They go right to the heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>We appreciate your reading this blog very much and hope you&#8217;ll share it with friends. \u00a0If you would like to receive Mark&#8217;s articles directly (absolutely no strings attached, data sharing or first born child required), please <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/subscribe\/\">sign up here.<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, spoke at my alma mater, the University of California, San Diego last week, and it was an honor and great privilege for me to attend.
