\n<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Howard Stern<\/p>\n

Until now, I\u2019d never imagined writing a blog about radio\u2019s shock jock, Howard Stern; nor did I ever expect we all might learn an important leadership lesson from him.<\/p>\n

But Stern\u2019s recent behavior while judging a TV talent competition offers a truly compelling example of effective leadership and, dare I say, of leading from the heart.<\/p>\n

Just in case you\u2019re unfamiliar with Howard Stern, he is a long-running talk-radio show host who\u2019s built a reputation for doing very racy sketches and, quite often, saying highly controversial things.<\/p>\n

And because Stern typically speaks his mind in a most unvarnished manner, many media pundits have predicted he will be an especially harsh new judge on America\u2019s Got Talent.\u00a0 <\/em>Think Simon Cowell on steroids.<\/p>\n

In the first show of the season, Stern is almost immediately put to the test.\u00a0 A seven-year-old rap singer is one of the earliest performers and, let\u2019s just say, he\u2019s not yet all that good.<\/p>\n

Stern isn\u2019t quick to react, but inevitably decides he\u2019s heard enough.\u00a0 He pushes the \u201cX\u201d button in front of him which effectively ends the youngster\u2019s hopes and dreams of going on further on the show. \u00a0\u00a0Not surprisingly, the little guy is crushed by his unexpected dismissal and immediately begins to cry.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s in this moment that Stern defies his critics.\u00a0 Instinctively, and without saying a word, he walks up on stage, gives the boy a hug, and calms him down.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll come back to Stern\u2019s act of admirable compassion in a moment.<\/p>\n

Last Wednesday night, I tuned in to see the final four singers perform on American Idol.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 At this point in the competition, of course, each of the remaining contestants is very, very good.\u00a0 Nonetheless, one person will be given the heave-ho until a champion is crowned and only a slight singing imperfection in these final weeks likely will be the reason someone gets booted.<\/p>\n

Noting that all three Idol judges, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson,\u00a0are highly experienced music industry experts, I fully expected them to parse out the differences among the four finalists and to help the voting audience discern which three performing artists deserved to survive another week.<\/p>\n

But none of them really did. \u00a0While one singer truly bombed on one song — and the judges let her know it — generally, all four singers were lauded with what appeared to be equivalent praise.\u00a0 In my opinion, the judges failed to do their job.<\/p>\n

We have it in our minds that criticism stings and, as leaders, this makes us reluctant to give much of it.\u00a0 But we\u2019re missing a wonderful opportunity to help someone grow and to become more every time we avoid calling out a legitimate performance limitation.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been my personal experience that leaders who identified my shortcomings did me an enormous favor.\u00a0 Like you and most human beings alive, I\u2019m a sensitive person who winces when my work is less favorably judged.\u00a0 I honestly can\u2019t say I\u2019ve ever enjoyed hearing my boss tell me I could do better.\u00a0 But knowing where to give one\u2019s attention is the fastest route to self-improvement and mastery.<\/p>\n

When my son was a high school freshman, he had an important paper to write \u2013 one which would have great weight in his final class grade.\u00a0 After taking his first stab at the report, he asked me to review it for him.\u00a0\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t good enough to submit and I told him directly.\u00a0 But I also assured him I would help him write the best paper of his life if he would let me coach him.<\/p>\n

It might surprise you that he re-worked that paper at least a dozen times before he turned it in.\u00a0 Yes, he was exasperated by all the additional work, and I\u2019m most certain he believed in the moment that I was setting the bar way too high.<\/p>\n

But when he got the paper back, he learned the truth.\u00a0 His teacher gave him an \u201cA\u201d and specifically told him that his quality of work wasn’t just what she expected, but also required in order to excel.\u00a0 He learned a valuable lesson about life.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what I admire about Howard Stern and what I hope you\u2019ll take away from all this.\u00a0 Once he determined the young singer\u2019s performance wasn\u2019t yet at the level it needed to be, he chose to be very direct and honest.\u00a0 But by demonstrating that he genuinely cared about the boy and his feelings, he left the kid\u2019s spirit in tact.\u00a0\u00a0 Consequently, don\u2019t be surprised to see this little guy back on the show next year \u2013 singing better than ever.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And he\u2019ll have Howard Stern of all people to thank.<\/p>\n
