{"id":1415,"date":"2012-05-21T03:00:18","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T10:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markccrowley.com\/?p=1415"},"modified":"2022-03-23T09:49:37","modified_gmt":"2022-03-23T16:49:37","slug":"why-we-lie-on-our-resumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/why-we-lie-on-our-resumes\/","title":{"rendered":"Why We Lie On Our R\u00e9sum\u00e9s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5411\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/images-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"162\" \/>&#8220;Yahoo hired him for what he\u2019s done in the past five, ten years. \u00a0It doesn\u2019t really matter for someone at this point in his career what he did at twenty-two. \u00a0He may have felt at some point in his career that he needed an extra something \u2014 and then he couldn\u2019t get rid of it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">~John Challenger<br \/>\nCEO, Challenger, Gray And Christmas<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just a few days ago, I got a call from the CEO of a local firm and was asked if I\u2019d be interested in taking on a consulting project.\u00a0\u00a0 We set up a meeting the next morning and, after just an hour\u2019s discussion, secured our agreement with a handshake.\u00a0 It was the easiest job I\u2019d ever won in my life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As I was leaving, the CEO asked if I could put together a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and get it back to him the next day.\u00a0 While it was clear I\u2019d been hired based upon my professional experience and reputation, I fully understood the desire to properly document my appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Just to emphasize the point, I already <em>had<\/em> the job before I set out to summarize my career experience and accomplishments.\u00a0 So why did this activity make me feel in any way vulnerable?\u00a0 Why did I have any concern at all that how this r\u00e9sum\u00e9 turned out could in some way put my new deal at risk?<\/p>\n<p>In answering those questions for myself, I concluded that a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is effectively an up-to-date report card for our respective work-lives.\u00a0 We know it will be scrutinized and judged, and fervently want it to represent us in the very best of light. Perhaps at no other time are we so motivated to make ourselves look good.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s perhaps because of the pressure we feel in the moment of drafting a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 that we\u2019re tempted to embellish or outright lie in telling our story.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0And this instinct, at all costs, must be resisted.<\/p>\n<p>More directly, if you can envision being asked for your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 at any time during the remainder of your career, you\u2019d be wise to already have practiced the act of brushing off the devil-on-your-shoulder that would insist your honest achievements don\u2019t otherwise measure up.\u00a0 Disastrous outcomes almost inevitably befall untruthful applicants.<\/p>\n<p>One highly publicized case in point is Scott Thompson, who last week was forced to resign his briefly held role as CEO of internet giant, Yahoo.\u00a0 Thompson effectively, and needlessly, blew up his career by posting a computer science degree on his r\u00e9sum\u00e9 that he had never actually earned.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u2019s astounding about Thompson\u2019s bad judgment.\u00a0\u00a0 Prior to throwing his name in the ring for the Yahoo job, he already had been the successful President at well-known e-commerce company, PayPal.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 His reputation and abilities were so well established in the technology community that no r\u00e9sum\u00e9 could provide greater insight into whether he\u2019d be a good fit for the role.\u00a0 Moreover, Thompson actually <em>has<\/em> a college degree, in accounting.\u00a0 Apparently disregarding his own very impressive track record, however, Thompson felt compelled to puff up his stats \u2013 and it got him fired.<\/p>\n<p>According to University of Massachusetts Psychologist, Robert Feldman, all humans have some inclination to lie simply in order to look good both to themselves and others.\u00a0 And this is valuable insight when it comes to r\u00e9sum\u00e9 writing.\u00a0 \u201cAdults want to control how others see them and want to elevate their own self esteem.\u00a0 We find that as soon as people feel that self-esteem is threatened, they immediately begin to lie at higher levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a big believer in karma and hold the conviction that all lies, even slight r\u00e9sum\u00e9 \u00a0edits, inevitably are brought into the light of truth.\u00a0\u00a0 And since trust is the foundational element of effective management, we must remember that even modest deceptions, once discovered, make it impossible for us to ever trust a leader again.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ll listen to it, there\u2019s a voice inside you that will keep you from straying from your own personal integrity.\u00a0 In the words of Stephen Colbert, \u201cYou don\u2019t look up truthiness in a book, you look it up in your gut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>We are grateful to our readers and always appreciate it when you share these blogs with others. \u00a0If you would like to receive future blogs directly, <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/subscribe\/\">sign up here.<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Yahoo hired him for what he\u2019s done in the past five, ten years. \u00a0It doesn\u2019t really matter for someone at this point in his career what he did at twenty-two. \u00a0He may have felt at some point in his career that he needed an extra something \u2014 and then he couldn\u2019t get rid of it.&#8221; [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12,13,14,15],"tags":[78,100,113,127,174,186,197,233,234],"class_list":["post-1415","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-lifeaffairs","category-heartleadershipinpractice","category-leadership","category-lifelessons","tag-ethics","tag-heart","tag-integrity","tag-leadership-2","tag-resumes","tag-scott-thompson","tag-success","tag-wisdom","tag-yahoo"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Why We Lie On Our R\u00e9sum\u00e9s - Mark C.
