Can you remember the last time a friend, colleague or a boss gave you an encouraging word \u2013 some intentionally thoughtful expression that directly conveyed another person sincerely believed in you and in your ability to achieve?<\/p>\n

Assuming you can, I\u2019d like you to recall how this gesture made you feel.<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m willing to go on record and say that I\u2019ve never outgrown the need for encouragement.\u00a0 I know for certain that reassuring, hopeful and inherently esteeming words have a profound effect on me.\u00a0 \u00a0They act like a booster-charge on my spirit, hearten me to stay the course when I\u2019m confronted with doubt and, quite often, influence me to aim higher.\u00a0 Almost always, encouragement from others leads me to believe more firmly in my own abilities.<\/p>\n

So, am I very different from you \u2013 <\/em>or anyone<\/em>?<\/p>\n

A few years ago, a friend gave me a copy of Stephen King\u2019s wonderful book, \u201cOn Writing<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I remember feeling great surprise after reading the book\u2019s dedication.\u00a0\u00a0 King, one of the most prolific and successful writers on the planet, thanked another author, Amy Tan, for giving him the encouragement to write it. \u00a0Stephen King needed someone else<\/em> to reassure him before writing this book?<\/p>\n

The lesson here is that no matter how much success we have at any point in our lives, all challenging tasks seem daunting at first. \u00a0Supportive words from people who care about us, therefore, have a great effect on emboldening our resolve.<\/p>\n

As leaders, we very often take for granted that our employees, especially the most tenured ones, are entirely self-sustaining and get up every morning sufficiently confident in taking on the day\u2019s challenges. \u00a0Thinking this way will greatly limit your effectiveness as a leader not to mention the achievements of your people.<\/p>\n

Here are five extremely powerful ways you can bolster your employees\u2019 motivations and, quite literally, give them the heart to take on the seemingly impossible.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ask Employees For Their Ideas<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Solicit your team for their ideas on how you can solve a legitimate and significant business problem.\u00a0 Tell them you consider them experts and would appreciate their best thinking on how to get things fixed.\u00a0\u00a0 Ideally, you\u2019ll later use many of their ideas to move your business forward (people love contributing this way), but expressing your personal appreciation to anyone and everyone who offers a suggestion inherently reinforces that you value them.\u00a0 Up goes the self-esteem.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Send Inspiring Team Communications<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When your employees have fallen behind on their goals, leaders have a great opportunity to inspire and encourage. \u00a0Very often when a team is underperforming, managers get freaked out and feel inclined to give a collective scolding (the expression \u201csales beating\u201d emanates from this state of mind).\u00a0 When you resist this temptation to instead convey that you believe in your team and its ability to recover, an invisible but nonetheless powerful energy gets distributed.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never seen anything more effective in stirring emotion and driving improved performance.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Spend Time With Someone Who\u2019s Struggling<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Many years ago, a relatively new employee of mine was struggling to make sales and came to me in despair.\u00a0 She felt deeply unsuccessful and wondered whether it was time for her to quit.\u00a0 In that moment, I offered to sit down with her and to listen to her presentation. \u00a0Surprisingly, her approach was exceptional; she\u2019d just lost her confidence.\u00a0\u00a0 I told her directly that she needed to relax, trust herself, and to know she was about to soar.\u00a0\u00a0 And that\u2019s all it took.\u00a0 That same person worked \u2013 and excelled<\/em> \u2013 for me in progressively higher roles for the next 17 years!\u00a0 All she needed was some encouragement.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Disclose Fears You Had When Confronted With Similar Challenges<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s very likely that your employees are performing tasks you\u2019ve already mastered.\u00a0 But, if truth be told, you weren\u2019t always the star you are today.\u00a0 So have the guts to tell your people about the times when you doubted your ability to learn a skill, achieve a goal, or overcome a setback.\u00a0\u00a0 That kind of honesty builds enormous trust, but it\u2019s also wildly inspiring.\u00a0 People see where you are today and the challenge in front of them suddenly seems more doable.<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0 \u00a0Send Employees An Article Or Quote That Made You Specifically Think Of Them<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Deep down, we all want to feel cared about \u2013 especially by our own manager.\u00a0 So the next time you come across a newspaper article or magazine story that reminds you of someone on your team, cut it out and give it to them.\u00a0 Knowing that your boss thinks about you after work is uplifting \u2013 and motivating!<\/p>\n

\u00a0Final Thoughts:<\/strong>\u00a0 My best advice to leaders is that you always leave people with the most positive vision of their futures. \u00a0The expression \u201cI believe in you\u201d is an extremely powerful way of communicating that.\u00a0\u00a0 And to my Tweetfriends, blog readers and all others who have kindly taken a moment to send me your words of encouragement, it\u2019s important you know how much those gestures mean to me and how often they keep me motivated to do what I do.<\/p>\n
