\"PlantingTrees\"<\/a>I\u2019ve come to trust that books show up in my life for a reason.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t tell you the number of times I\u2019ve been in a bookstore when some internal radar system seemed to guide me down the aisles until a knowing voice insisted that I \u201cbuy that one<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The great mystery of this process is that the books I\u2019ve ended up with have always proved to be transformational in some way.<\/p>\n

But a few weeks ago, I thought my inner guidance had gone on the fritz.\u00a0 I was staring at a book called, \u201cWhat A Plant Knows: A Field Guide To The Senses<\/i>\u201d and thought for certain it couldn\u2019t be meant for me.<\/p>\n

But the \u201cvoice\u201d had a way of persuading me that it was.\u00a0 It seemed to be fully aware that I was no<\/i> botanist, had taken \u201cBiology For Non-majors\u201d in college, and specifically came into Barnes and Noble to find something leadership related.<\/p>\n

Yet just as all other times in the past, I quickly discovered I\u2019d ended up with the right book at the right time.\u00a0 And long before I\u2019d read the final pages, it became quite clear that a profound lesson on leadership was indeed embedded in its pages.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a summary of what I learned.<\/p>\n

According to author, Dr. Daniel Chamovitz, human beings have much more in common with sunflowers and oak trees than we ever may have realized.\u00a0 Extensive genetic research proves that plants have parallel abilities to sense and respond to their environments.\u00a0 Without a brain or central nervous system to guide them, plants have a remarkable protoplasmic intelligence that informs them when they are flourishing, and when they\u2019re under threat.\u00a0 Like all living things, they react positively to what is life supportive and negatively to what is not.<\/p>\n
