But as distressing as engagement is in the United States, the truth is it\u2019s far worse in Europe and the UK \u2013 a fact this podcast is dedicated to exploring.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few days before this interview with <strong>Dan Cable, professor of Organizational Behavior at the London Business School,<\/strong> the London <em>Times <\/em>reported statistics that might be laughable were they not true:<\/p>\n<p>Research shows 1-in-2 Britains dread getting out of bed on work-day mornings, and 1-in-4 say they <em><u>never<\/u>\u00a0<\/em>have a single happy moment while on the job. Making matters worse, the study asserts that workers are <em>starving <\/em>for appreciation and recognition \u2013 an indication that workplace managers aren\u2019t even getting the basics right.<\/p>\n<p>A consistent theme of the <strong><em>Lead From The Heart<\/em><\/strong> podcast is that findings like these shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise. We continue to manage human beings in ways that effectively undermine their optimal performance \u2013 and it\u2019s because we\u2019re still employing outdated leadership practices passed on to us from generations long-ago.<\/p>\n<p>A while back, I asked Wharton Professor and best-selling author <strong>Adam Grant<\/strong> to recommend people he believed would be great guests on this podcast; and Dan Cable was first on his list.\u00a0Dan (as the <strong>author of the new book, &#8220;<em>Alive At Work&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>) very much believes there\u2019s a biological reason so many of us are discontented at work. And much of this podcast is devoted to exploring the many ways managers can re-activate their employee&#8217;s \u201c<em>seeking system,\u201d<\/em> the part of the mind that holds such great sway over human behavior.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Unknown-3.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3854 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Unknown-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a>Dan holds an undergraduate degree from Penn State University along with a masters and Ph.D from Cornell University.
