\"JimOne day just a few weeks ago, I woke up thinking about Jim Rohn, a person I heard speak at a company conference in 1987.<\/p>\n

That Mr. Rohn popped into my consciousness just as I was waking wasn\u2019t entirely surprising to me.\u00a0 Information he shared in his presentation nearly 25 years ago had a profound and lasting effect on my life, and I still speak of him frequently to others.<\/p>\n

But simply because he was the very first<\/em> thought of my day, I felt compelled to do a Google search on him.\u00a0 And from a linked obituary I found there, I learned he\u2019d died two years ago \u2013 on December 5, 2009.<\/p>\n

I took all this as a sign from the universe that my post this week (near the 2 year anniversary of his passing) should be devoted to Mr. Rohn and to sharing some of the most powerful ideas he presented.\u00a0 If you\u2019re unfamiliar with Jim Rohn, he was one of America\u2019s greatest motivational speakers ever; I encourage you to research more of his work.<\/p>\n

Rohn launched a three-hour address by summarizing his biography.\u00a0 At 25 years old, he was on the road to nowhere special.\u00a0 He\u2019d dropped out of college, was working at Sears as a stock clerk \u2013 and yet dreamed of having a more successful and fulfilled life.<\/p>\n

It was around this time Rohn attended a lecture given by a wealthy entrepreneur named J. Earl Shoaff.\u00a0 While impressed by Mr. Shoaff\u2019s professional achievements, Rohn was particularly captivated by the life philosophy which propelled them.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t long after that Rohn joined Shoaff\u2019s direct sales organization where he committed himself to a process of personal development.\u00a0 Leveraging all he learned \u2013 and with Shoaff\u2019s personal mentorship \u2013 Rohn became a millionaire just six years later.<\/p>\n

Rohn devoted the rest of his life to sharing all he\u2019d learned from Mr. Shoaf and to studying the beliefs, behaviors and philosophy of exceptionally successful people.\u00a0 The synthesis of all the insights he acquired was the basis for the presentation I heard him give \u2013 what he\u2019d themed, \u201cThe Seven Strategies for Health, Wealth and Happiness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Rohn was a realist.\u00a0 Despite having accumulated extraordinary \u2013 and potentially life-changing \u2013 wisdom over nearly sixty years, he told his audience directly that most of us would do little or nothing with the information once our conference was over.\u00a0 He called that \u201ca mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Determined to not be one of those people, I took down copious notes which I still have today.<\/p>\n

Rohn transitioned into the core of his address by making this ponderable statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything you have in your life, you\u2019ve attracted by the person you\u2019ve become.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

By this he meant, our jobs, relationships, wealth \u2013 everything.<\/em><\/p>\n

Once we had fully digested this remark, he presented an even more impressive insight:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to get more, you\u2019ve got to become more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rohn sought to instill in us that the life of our dreams is assuredly within reach, just as long as we\u2019re willing to devote ourselves to constant learning \u2013 to becoming more than we already are.\u00a0 He said \u201cthe payoff from the constant pursuit of knowledge is great,\u201d and encouraged us to \u201cbe a student of good ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rohn believed that \u201call good things are upstream\u201d and challenged us to \u201cread all the good books,\u201d and to \u201cattack procrastination.\u201d\u00a0 He assured us that \u201cregret weighs tons and discipline only ounces.\u201d<\/p>\n

He reminded us that we all experience “seasons” in life and emphasized that “virtually everyone<\/em> thrives in the summers.” His most compelling nugget of wisdom came next: “it’s in how we endure our “winters” that determines the outcome of our lives.”<\/p>\n

Jim Rohn saw great potential in every human being and had this wonderful advice for leaders: \u201cA good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those doing well do better.\u201d<\/p>\n
