The truth is, most of us (try as we will) would just assume not ever fail.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Harvard Business School professor, Amy Edmondson<\/strong>, we\u2019ve always tended to think of failure as being the opposite of success \u2013 an erroneous belief that inherently influences many a workplace leader to avoid failing at all costs. It also influences managers to <em>punish<\/em> employee failures.<\/p>\n<p>In her speeches to business groups, Edmondson often asks audiences, <em>\u201cWhat percentage of the failures in your organization do you think are blameworthy?<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nConsistently, the answer is 1-to-4 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asks, <em>\u201cHow many of the failures get treated as blameworthy?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The answer is consistently 70-to-90 percent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6038 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/shopping-197x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/shopping-197x300.jpeg 197w, https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/shopping.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/>In her new book, <strong><em>\u201cRight Kind Of Wrong: The Science Of Failing Well,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Edmondson posits that failure actually can work in our favor \u2013 &amp; that workplace leaders need a reframe on all the good that can come from \u201cfailing well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a Ph.D. student at Harvard, Edmondson was assigned to a research project at a nearby hospital. The thesis she sought to prove was that the more cohesive, trusting and collaborative a team was, the fewer mistakes they would make when treating patients.<\/p>\n<p>But when she learned that the most unified teams actually made <em>more<\/em> mistakes compared to other less interdependent teams, she was initially confused, distressed \u2013 &amp; feared she had failed. That is until she discovered that teams anchored on mutual trust simply <em>disclosed<\/em> more of their errors in order to learn from them and improve.<\/p>\n<p>While Edmondson at first believed her \u201cfailed\u201d thesis was an academic embarrassment, ironically, her determination as a researcher led her to understand the importance of <strong><i>psychological safety <\/i><\/strong>(in this case, feeling safe to openly\u00a0acknowledge failures<strong><i>)\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>in the workplace \u2013 what\u2019s gone on to become her life\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>In this podcast, Amy explains how we can minimize unproductive failure while also maximizing what we gain from flubs of all stripes. She shares how we and our organizations can embrace our human fallibility, learn exactly when failure is our friend, and prevent most of it when it is not.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">NOTE:\u00a0 This is the third time Edmondson has been a guest on this podcast and her episode, \u201c<em>Why Psychological Safety Breeds Exceptionally High Performing Teams\u201d <\/em>is the #1 most downloaded episode in our entire series.
