{"id":633,"date":"2012-01-04T05:00:08","date_gmt":"2012-01-04T13:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markccrowley.com\/?p=633"},"modified":"2012-01-04T05:00:08","modified_gmt":"2012-01-04T13:00:08","slug":"handwritten-notes-drive-uncommon-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/handwritten-notes-drive-uncommon-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"Handwritten Notes Drive Uncommon Performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-635\" title=\"Handwritten Note\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/images-12.jpeg\" alt=\"Fountain Pen and A Handwritten Note\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/>On my most recent birthday, I got a call from a former employee, Lucas.<\/p>\n<p>Now a very successful bank manager, Lucas was a brand-new teller when I first met him fifteen years ago in my role as Regional Manager.\u00a0 After being seriously injured in a helicopter crash, he\u2019d been forced to leave the Marine Corps to find an entirely new career.<\/p>\n<p>With no banking experience, he was starting over from square one.<\/p>\n<p>In our earliest conversation, Lucas told me he already was dreaming of becoming a branch manager and hoped to make that progression quickly.\u00a0 Knowing the learning curve ahead of him was steep for these aspirations, I advised him to master every assignment he was given and to pursue excellence all along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Based upon feedback I subsequently received from his different supervisors, it was clear Lucas took my advice to heart.\u00a0 Quite consistently, I heard he was extremely hard working, committed to learning and contributing at exceptional levels.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally when Lucas earned a step up the ladder or helped his branch achieve an important goal, I sent him a handwritten note in acknowledgement.\u00a0 Very briefly, I expressed my congratulations and appreciation &#8212; and encouraged him to stay the course with respect to his desire to become a manager.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it had been over seven years since Lucas and I last worked together, during my birthday chat he surprised me by mentioning these very same notes!<!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/images-11.jpeg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know that I still carry every single letter you ever wrote me?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Flabbergasted, I said, \u201cYou\u2019ve kept those notes from all those years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like the Marine he once was, he replied, \u201cYes, sir!\u00a0 I actually have them with me right now.\u00a0 I keep them in my planner and re-read them whenever I need some inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was, of course, delighted to hear that Lucas had held on to my notes.\u00a0 But I was also curious as to why they meant so much to him.\u00a0 But before I had time to frame the question, he interrupted me with the answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were about to ask me why I held on to your notes all these years, I\u2019ll tell you.\u00a0 It\u2019s because no one I\u2019ve ever worked for since has ever thought to do what you did \u2013 to show me that you really cared about me personally and that you were paying attention to the work I did. \u00a0I worked extremely hard all those years because of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a gift to me on my birthday, Lucas reminded me of how powerful a handwritten note can be in an employee\u2019s life.\u00a0 In a world where we all tend to rely on electronic communication, never forget that something handwritten hits people in their hearts \u2013 to enduring and inspiring effect.<\/p>\n<p>PS: I encourage you to write a few of these notes right now while you&#8217;re thinking about it. \u00a0I promise you that doing so will immediately enrich you and that each recipient will express their appreciation &#8212; maybe even years from now on your birthday!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sharing these posts with others is cool! \u00a0If you would like to receive them directly, please <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/subscribe\/\">enroll here.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On my most recent birthday, I got a call from a former employee, Lucas.
