{"id":706,"date":"2012-01-15T12:00:54","date_gmt":"2012-01-15T20:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markccrowley.com\/?p=706"},"modified":"2012-01-15T12:00:54","modified_gmt":"2012-01-15T20:00:54","slug":"give-your-people-a-little-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/give-your-people-a-little-love\/","title":{"rendered":"Give Your People A Little Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-708\" title=\"Art Gallery\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-wmplo.xyz\/mark-c-divi5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/images15.jpeg\" alt=\"Art Gallery\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/>Here\u2019s a quick story my son, Ryan, once told me about how our words and gestures can have a really destructive or constructive effect on the people we lead.<\/p>\n<p>As a young manager of a high-end art gallery following college, Ryan found himself way behind schedule in getting all the pieces of a new exhibit hung.\u00a0 He was just a few days away from an opening night gala and was feeling the stress of meeting all the deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>And so, he instinctively began barking orders.<\/p>\n<p>The person doing all the actual hanging, Chris, was a genius performer in his role. He had experience in land surveying and used radar to precisely place all of the artwork.\u00a0 While earning only a nominal wage, he displayed a huge sense of ownership for his work and no one in the company could match his effectiveness in this task.<\/p>\n<p>Under the pressure of the moment, however, and in with a desire to speed up Chris\u2019s work, Ryan started bossing him around. Not surprisingly, Chris shut down.\u00a0 His spirit became deflated and his physiology confirmed that of someone who\u2019d become really unhappy and resentful. \u00a0His progress slowed further.<\/p>\n<p>Another gallery worker, Tim, observed Chris\u2019s distress and found a moment to take his boss aside.\u00a0 \u201cRyan, you\u2019re really going about this the wrong way,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve gotta show Chris a little love.\u00a0 If you do, he\u2019ll do a perfect job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan knew instantly that he had let the pressure get to him and \u201ctook his employee\u2019s advice to heart.\u201d\u00a0 He went directly to Chris and apologized for being so hard on him. He expressed to Chris that he was especially grateful for having him on his team and that he truly appreciated all of his amazing work.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all it took to cheer up Chris and get him back on track.\u00a0 According to Ryan, he ended up doing a knock-out job with every piece of art perfectly hung before their important show.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s not entirely obvious, the hero and leadership model in this story was Tim. \u00a0Sensitive in the moment to how his co-worker was feeling \u2013 and what was interfering with his normally high productivity \u2013\u00a0Tim saw to it that Chris got the support he needed.
